Philips has supplied 293 LED luminaires for a busy stretch of highway near Amsterdam. Meanwhile, Philips Lighting UK argues that switching-off street lights is a false economy, and modern technology such as LEDs and control systems offer a better option.
Motorists on one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the Netherlands are now able to benefit from an all-LED highway lighting project, which will be switched on at a ceremony on February 17th. Lighting manufacturer Philips, which supplied the LED luminaires, has described this as “the world’s first highway to be lit entirely by LED,” although participants in other projects around the world may disagree.
Philips – in collaboration with the Rijkswaterstaat (RWS, the Dutch highway authority), contractors Gebroeders Van der Lee and consultants Spectrum – has installed LED lighting along a 7km-length of the A44, one of the busy highways feeding commuters into and out of Amsterdam.

A spokesperson for Philips Lighting Netherlands told LEDs Magazine that a total of 293 luminaires have been installed along the highway. The pole height is 12m and the spacing is 56m.
